Partnering with HART of Folsom to provide shelter for community members
Members of the Folsom Stake participated in the annual HART Winter Shelter which runs from January 2 to mid-March. The shelter provides warmth, safety, good food, connections with other Folsom services, and an environment of encouragement and love.
A stay at the shelter can be the first step in someone’s journey toward self-sufficiency and greater independence.
The shelter is staffed by 10 different religious organizations in Folsom including Oak Hills Church, Lakeside Church, Harbor church, Disciple Church, the Muslim Community of Folsom, and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Each organization is responsible to provide approximately 35 volunteers to staff one week of the winter shelter. The Folsom Stake has participated in this event for the past 5 years and enjoys the partnership with other interfaith groups in our community.
At the conclusion of the winter shelter, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints also hosted the HART Volunteer Reception. Leaders and volunteers from HART of Folsom, as well as members of other religious organizations gather to celebrate the end of the winter shelter. Beverly Seiss, director of the winter shelter, shares with the audience the impact made to the lives of the guests that year. These heart touching messages remind everyone of the Savior’s directive to feed the hungry, take in the stranger, clothe the naked, and visit the sick (Matt 25:35-36).
35 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in:
36 Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.
This passage serves as a powerful reminder of our responsibility to care for others and to act with compassion and kindness, as these actions are seen as acts of service to Jesus himself.
